SNOW IS NEVER LACKING IN THE MIDDLE OF MAY

Zanzotto, an Italian poet, fascinated by the mountains above Belluno wrote a verse which starts with the words ‘MAI MANCANTE NEVE DI METÀ MAGGIO’. In Italian the sequence of the letters ‘M’ and ‘N’ actually creates the outline of the mountain peaks themselves.
In fact looking at the outline of the mountains is like a game to play whatever the season and whatever the day of the year, apart of course from when the fog and mist are hanging low. Thinking about it, it is a game that you can play at dawn or dusk, even at night under the moon. You can even play it by looking at an old postcard and imagining the grizzly or friendly bear roaming around. Zanzotto knew well that a snowfall in May was not really welcome in Italy and could cause some chaos. In Germany, however, a late May snowfall was worth the title of ‘The Ice Saints’. Whatever the reaction to a May snowfall, the game we play remains a fun one for young and old alike.
